According to the U.S. Department of Transportation data, airlines in 2013 collected a staggering amount of over $6 billion in baggage/reservation change and cancellation fees, but, let’s forget about those reservation and cancellation fees for now and just concentrate on those baggage fees!
U.S. airlines collected a whopping $3.5 billion in baggage fees alone, which is a 3.8% increase in fees compared to 2011
Delta Airlines (Winners) raked in a massive $833 Million
United Airlines takes second place with a profit of $625 Million
Now, get this….with the merger of American Airlines and U.S. Airways, combine their profits on baggage fees and it takes you out of the atmosphere to the tune of more than $1 Billion!
That’s hardly surprising as American was the first airline to charge these fees, this started up in June 2008, costing you around $15 per bag, raking in a profit of $277,991 that year, and others swiftly followed. Our thanks to American Airlines for starting this trend.
And on another note…If you’re thinking about jumping on a Frontier Airlines Flight, and you book your ticket through a third-party, be prepared to be charged $25 – $100 for your carry-on bag(s). Not only will you cough-up for carry-on bags, as of 01 Jul, you will be expected to pay $1.99 (certain fares) for your coffee, juice or tea!
Note to self, avoid Frontier Airlines.
So I am wondering,do you have anything nice or not so nice to say about airlines, especially all these baggage fees? Please feel free to share your positive and or negative thoughts!
